I Wanna Rock on Guitar: The Riff That Legally Obligates You to Pump Your Fist

Three power chords, one anthem, and zero reasons to sit down.

There are riffs that whisper, riffs that noodle, and then there is "I Wanna Rock" — a riff that kicks the door off its hinges, spills your drink and demands you raise a denim-clad fist. Subtlety was not invited to this session.

This 25-second clip lays out the intro and main riff of Twisted Sister's 1984 anthem on guitar, so you can go from zero to fist-pumping in about the time it takes to tease your hair. It is loud, it is simple, and it is gloriously fun to nail.

How the "I Wanna Rock" riff works

Underneath all the eyeliner it is a masterclass in the power chord: two or three notes, no third, all attitude. The magic is in the right hand — tight palm mutes on the chugging notes, then you lift the heel of your hand off the strings so the accented power chords ring out open and huge. That mute-to-open contrast is the whole anthem in miniature.

Concrete takeaway: park your palm lightly on the bridge for the muted chugs, and consciously release it the instant you hit the ringing chord. Keep the pick moving in steady downstrokes for that relentless 80s drive. Nail that one move and the riff basically plays itself.
