You know the blues chords. You know the pentatonic. You have watched the videos, bought the picks, maybe even sacrificed a small amount of dignity at an open mic. And yet, the moment you try to make those chords swing, your rhythm quietly leaves the building and takes your groove with it. This clip is the sound of exactly that — me having all the blues chords and, apparently, no rhythm.
It's a loose, bluesy little original: some random riffs and chords (with a few extra notes because I couldn't help myself) draped over a blues shuffle rhythm that refuses to stay put. Anyone who has ever fought to lock chords into a swinging triplet feel will recognise the exact flavour of the struggle. The shuffle struggle, as it turns out, is very real.
How the blues shuffle rhythm actually works
Here is the dirty secret nobody tells you: a shuffle isn't a different chord voicing, it's a different way of chopping up time. Instead of splitting each beat into two even eighth notes, you split it into a triplet — three even pulses — and then you silently ignore the middle one. That leaves a long-short, long-short lilt, the musical equivalent of a slightly drunk walk. Your fingers already know the chords; what trips you up is that your strumming hand keeps sneaking back to straight eighths the second you stop paying attention.
The concrete fix is almost annoyingly simple: count triplets out loud — "trip-a-let, trip-a-let" — and only play on the first and third of each. Better yet, ditch the chords entirely for a while and just pump the root notes over a twelve bar blues until the groove locks in. When your fretting hand has nothing to do, your picking hand finally has to own the feel. Then, and only then, add the chords back. Suddenly the shuffle stops fighting you and starts carrying you.
